Europe's fastest selling speed camera locator now costs less than a speeding fine
[ 20 September 2007 ]
TOAD UK Ltd, the company behind the UK's best selling speed camera locator Inforad, has dropped the price to less than the minimum speeding fine. The world's smallest speed camera locator will cost just £59.99 from 1st October.
Inforad has always promoted safer driving through speed camera alerts, as they are located at accident blackspots. With its lowest ever price, Inforad technology and safety features is now accessible to even more drivers.
The latest version of Inforad is GPS based and therefore remains legal under the Road Safety Act 2006.
Sales last year rose dramatically in the run up to Christmas, suggesting that many were bought as Christmas presents for loved ones.
Research conducted by TOAD has shown that safety camera locators such as Inforad make for better drivers, as users are more aware of speed limits and accident blackspots. The survey found that 94% of GPS speed camera locator users become more aware of their speed, 93% are more aware of speed limits and 89% feel that they drive more safely.
Nick Grimond, Managing Director of Toad Group, comments: "We are delighted to be able to bring the safety features of Inforad to a much wider market through this new lower price. We believe that Inforad is not only the smallest unit currently available, but now it is also the most advanced and lowest priced speed camera locator the market has to offer."

Toad Sees Delayed Increase In Demand For Hands Free Phone Kits
[ 28 March 2007 ]
Toad, the UK's leading independent installer of hands-free phone kits for the fleet industry, has seen a marked increase in demand for new installations in recent weeks. Demand has risen 20% in the weeks since 27th February when the new, harsher penalties for using a hand held mobile phone whilst driving came into force.
Andrew Sarssam, Toad's Director of Sales, believes that confusion and complacency are behind the last minute surge in demand. He commented: "When the use of hand-held mobile phones in cars was banned over three years ago, the fleet industry was very quick to act and install hands-free kits. We saw a ten-fold increase in demand in the months leading up to the law change. However, this time around fleets have been slower to respond. Although many had already fitted kits, the last minute rush suggests that some were caught off-guard."
Research by the Press Association has found that 240 drivers a day are being fined £60 and having their licenses endorsed with three points for using hand-held phones whilst driving.

Toad Launches New Hi-Tech Caravan Alarm
[ 28 February 2007 ]
Toad's industry-leading caravan alarm range has just been re-launched with exciting new interactive features. Now ‘Vansafe' will send owners a text message to alert them to unauthorised movement of the caravan, or any other problems, such as an alarm being activated or the caravan Leisure battery running low. This upgrade to the range is particularly useful for owners who keep their caravans at a separate or remote location where sound-only alarms are of limited value.
Vansafe retails at £225 or £424 with the interactive feature, including fitting. Customers who want to upgrade their existing Vansafe alarm with Text-Alert can do so for £199 including fitting.
The Toad caravan alarm range was the first of its type to use PIR detectors and sensors to prevent both theft of and from vulnerable caravans. Now Toad engineers have added the very latest in mobile phone technology to allow owners to communicate with their caravan remotely. The Text-Alert feature will not only send out immediate messages when there is a problem, it also has the ability to receive messages to sound the alarm, for example.
Customers also have the option to upgrade to an on-line GSM tracking system. This uses the very latest in GSM technology to track the stolen caravan via the internet, for just £29.99.
Vansafe's additional features include a self charging battery back-up power supply and remote control operation featuring a panic facility. The battery back-up system provides an independent power source in the event of leisure battery failure.
Toad's Vansafe system uses wireless infra red sensors to detect intruders. The system also incorporates a sophisticated sensor, which will detect caravan steady leg movement, as well as sensing unauthorised electrical disconnection from or connection to a towing vehicle.
The new system can also protect a caravan whilst it is occupied overnight. The system can be upgraded to allow part-arming, for example disarming the internal sensor whilst protecting the main entry point.
A range of accessories can be added to the standard Vansafe system, making it uniquely adaptable and ultimately more secure. Wire free awning sensors, impact sensors, and additional internal sirens are all available.

[ 19 February 2007 ]
21st Century, specialists in CCTV systems for passenger transport and has made a unique promise to customers using the Heartbeat™ diagnostic system.
The company claims that it will 'Keep it Green' referring to its unique status monitoring software which automatically provides a traffic light warning system showing which CCTV are functioning and which require attention. Toad In Sat Nav Anti-Fraud Initiative
[ 17 January 2007 ]
TOAD, the insurance replacement specialist, is piloting a new 'end to end' claims validation service to combat an increasing amount of fraud and exaggeration with regard to portable satellite navigation claims.
The service, which operates from Toad's newly refurbished 100 seat claims centre in Surrey, handles portable navigation claims from notification through to settlement. As a claim passes quickly through the validation checks, an innovative and comprehensive methodology references all the claim data, policy holder description, documentary evidence, compatibility, accessories, mapping, software and licensing checks to ensure the claim is fair and represents the item reported as lost, damaged or stolen.
As part of this service, Toad is developing a database of navigation mapping licenses and serial numbers, to help identify secondary claims and where possible to repatriate stolen equipment.
With one in five of all insurance claims Toad processes being for portable navigation systems, Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales, commented "We believe portable navigation theft presents a growing risk to insurers and these types of claims are particularly susceptible to fraud and exaggeration. This new service will play an important part in controlling costs in this high risk area."

Vandalism Fuels Demand For Fixed Site CCTV
[ 18 December 2006 ]
As vandalism continues to be a problem across the country, 21st Century is receiving an increasing number of requests for fixed site CCTV solutions. Although the company is better known for its on-bus systems, the award winning ProGuard technology is being adapted to offer the same level of protection to depots, offices and staff car parks.
Depot vandalism costs bus operators millions of pounds every year, not only through the cost of the damage but also through injuries and vehicle down time. Depots are also a target for theft, not only of fuel and other company property, but also property from staff.
The 21st Century systems are already in use at depots for many existing customers, who use the advanced ProGuard system to protect staff and passengers on board bus fleets. The 21st Century depot system can be adapted for depots of all sizes and any number of cameras providing high quality digital images that are downloaded and retrieved with ease, giving 100% coverage at all vulnerable sites.
Paul Rogers, 21st Century's Sales and Marketing Director, comments: "We know that security is a major concern for bus operators, in particular at depots, offices, staff car parks and anywhere they have assets. We provide the same competitively priced solutions for depots as we do for buses, with coverage at entrances and exits, vending machines, safes and fuel pumps. We can also provide service and maintenance plans that tie in with our on-bus maintenance. Many depots have very little security and often, the very presence of the cameras acts as a deterrent, but in the event of any incident, high quality images can be retrieved, making identification and subsequent prosecution much more likely."

Met Police Turn To 21st Century For Clarity Of Images
[ 9 October 2006 ]
The Metropolitan Police and the BBC have recently turned to 21st Century for assistance with a number of high profile crimes, as images from the company's CCTV systems installed on London buses are of such high quality. Arriva London has installed 21st Century's ProGuard digital recorder, which combines high quality digital images with WiFi technology for easy management.
Arriva London fitted the 21st Century CCTV system throughout its fleet in order to make travelling by bus safer and more convenient for customers and employees. Because of the quality of the images and the WiFi technology enabling the automatic download of images, Arriva only requires a team of 10 staff to monitor the entire on bus CCTV operation.
Paula Tansley, CCTV/Risk Manager for Arriva London, is quite used to receiving calls for help from the Met. She comments: "Police officers find that the combination of excellent quality images and the cover our cameras offer, gives them an excellent picture of a situation."
Images from the on bus systems have been used recently with great success on the BBC TV crime show Crimewatch. Paula explains: "Fortunately serious crimes are very rare, but we were pleased to be able to help with this case and to provide evidence that, through the viewers of Crimewatch, has led to a conviction."

Toad Expresses Concern Over In-Car Mobile Phone Confusion
[ 26 September 2006 ]
Toad (UK) Limited, the UK's leading independent installer of hands-free phone kits, has expressed concern over the continuing confusion over the law relating to the use of mobile phones in cars.
The law changed on 1st December 2003, however, Toad claims that continuing confusion over the law has led to an increase in the number of drivers flouting the rules. The Road Safety Bill, which has yet to become law, may seek to address this problem and even increase the penalties. However, the Bill has already seen several delays, and the risks posed by drivers flouting the current law remain a major problem.
Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales at Toad commented, "There was a lot of confusion at the time the initial legislation was introduced. Three years on and the confusion continues, and drivers have become complacent, slipping back into bad habits. The Government has promised to update the law with phase two of the legislation, but we are still waiting for the clarification that is so clearly needed."
In some parts of the UK, the number of drivers prosecuted for using the phones while driving has shot up in recent months. Sarssam comments: "Clearly the fact that prosecutions are on the increase shows that people are not getting the message. It is still a frequent sight to see drivers using their phones on the road. The message needs to be made clear and drivers should be more concerned about causing an accident than incurring a £30 fine."

Datatool In Crime Busting Initiative
[ 11 September 2006 ]
- Tagging day in conjunction with Northumbria Police -
Datatool has assisted Northumbria Police in a new initiative to combat scooter thefts in the North Tyneside area. Scooter owners were invited to attend a Tagging Day to have a specially adapted Datatool tagging kit installed free of charge.
The kits, based on Datatool's market leading Gold Kit, were specially adapted for the initiative, and Datatool provided Northumbria Police with a free scanner.
Electronic ID tagging is one of the most effective deterrents to motorcycle parts theft. Datatool's Gold Kit invisibly ID's the motorcycle with unique codes using transponder tags that are hidden in secure locations around the bike. The codes are held on Datatool's dedicated database and enable the police to quickly identify the bike or its parts if they are stolen.
At the Tagging Day, held on Saturday 26th August, North Tyneside's scooter owners were also given free crime prevention advice from Northumbria Police.
PC Phil McConville of the Wallsend Community Police Team, who organised the event, commented: "We have been working hard within the community to reduce crime in the area, and this tagging day was an attempt to focus on a specific group of motorcycle users to try to bring crime down even further. The event was a great success, and we are confident that Datatool's tagging kits will make a great contribution to our efforts."

Europe's Fastest Selling Speed Camera Locator Packs Even More Punch
[ 21 July 2006 ]
- now the world's smallest unit but with extra features -
TOAD UK Ltd, the company that launched the UK's most competitively priced speed camera locator last year, has done it again, with the latest Inforad. Packed with features, the latest version is much smaller and has an attractive circular design, but is still leading the way in low cost functionality with a RRP of £89.99.
The latest version of Inforad, already Europe's fastest selling detector, works on the same GPS system as the earlier model, and remains legal under the proposed Road Safety Bill. The manufacturers claim that it is the smallest unit on the market.
Research conducted by TOAD has shown that safety camera locators such as Inforad make for better drivers, as users are more aware of speed limits and accident blackspots*.
The Inforad unit works straight from the box, as it automatically searches for the minimum 3 satellite signals needed to calculate the device's position. The unit will then alert the driver to up coming fixed speed cameras and accident blackspots via a series of lights and volume adjustable alerts. It will display additional warnings if the driver's speed is in excess of the limit for that area.
The system can be programmed for locations of specific interest to the driver (Points of Interest) such as playgrounds and schools, and can also be used to alert the driver if a pre-set speed is being exceeded, e.g. in temporary speed limits such as motorway road works which regularly have speed cameras added. The easy to navigate website is at http://www.gpsinforad.co.uk/
Nick Grimond, Managing Director of Toad Group, comments: "When we first launched Inforad it took the market by storm, and brought the safety features of such devices to a much wider market. We have been able to develop the technology and take all the best features of the original and expanded on them to create the most advanced low cost device the market has to offer."

Toad To Give Away Advertising Budget To Independent Dealer To Mark Launch Of The New Inforad
[ 28 June 2006 ]
- new compact Inforad packs even more features for RRP of £89.99 -
TOAD UK Limited, the company that launched the UK's most competitively priced speed camera detector last year, has done it again, with the latest version of Inforad. Packed with features, the latest version is much smaller and has an attractive circular design, but is still leading the way in low cost functionality with a RRP of £89.99.
Toad has put together a unique offer, specifically aimed at independent dealers, of an advertising contribution of up to £7.50 per unit against purchases. This offer is designed to enable outlets to promote the new version of Inforad and drive sales. Toad is also distributing a percentage of profit on all on-line sales made through www.gpsinforad.co.uk to any independent business actively purchasing and promoting Inforad.
Paul Grimond, Sales Director for Toad, comments: "We believe that this combined offer is the first of its kind for the market. We know that advertising is a great way to promote sales, but not every independent dealer has a budget to really make it work. Our dealer offer is a great way to support and reward our partners."
Paul goes on to explain why the latest Inforad will be an even bigger seller: "When we first launched Inforad it took the market by storm, and brought the safety features of such devices to a much wider market. We have been able to develop the technology and take all the best features of the original and expanded on them to create the most advanced low cost device the market has to offer."
The latest version of Inforad works on the same GPS system as the earlier, market-leading budget model, but has a more attractive design and many more features, making it more competitive. New Inforad also remains legal under the proposed Road Safety Bill.
Research conducted by TOAD has shown that safety camera locators such as Inforad make for better drivers, as users are more aware of speed limits and accident blackspots*.
The success of the first low cost Inforad will ensure the ongoing success of this latest version, as all current Inforad users have verified and added to the Inforad database, ensuring that it is one of the most comprehensive and accurate available.

Theft Thwarted By Datatool Text-Alert
[ 21 June 2006 ]
The attempted theft of a treasured Kawasaki Ninja was thwarted last week by a text message sent via Text-Alert from Datatool, the UK's leading supplier of innovative electronic motorcycle products.
Andrew Aldridge, a pub landlord and father of four from Rubery in the West Midlands, bought his Kawasaki with the Datatool Text-Alert fitted as he particularly wanted the extra security. Andy has no alternative but to park his motorbike behind his house out of earshot of the alarm, so the Text-Alert gives him extra peace of mind.
On Monday evening he was relaxing watching MTV after having secured the motorbike in its usual location, when he received a text message saying that the motion sensor had detected movement. This message was immediately followed by another telling him that the alarm had been activated, although he could hear nothing.
He immediately went to investigate and discovered a group of youths trying to steal his bike. On seeing Andrew they immediately ran off, leaving the bike behind.
Andrew Aldridge told us: "I am certain that without Datatool's Text-Alert my bike would have been stolen as there was no way I could have heard the alarm going off. It's good to know that if anyone goes near the bike again Text-Alert will immediately tell me!"

S4 is here!
[ 20 June 2007 ]
Datatool has developed the UK's smallest, most versatile motorcycle alarm and immobiliser yet. The S4 range covers all categories of the UK motorcycle market and it's surface area is not much bigger than the size of a credit card. It may be small but the alarm siren volume rivals any currently on the market and because of its incredibly small size the S4 can be installed in any bike, in any position, at any angle.
The S4 range comprises the S4 - C1 (Super Category 1 alarm) and the S4 - C4 (designed for bikes less than 125cc) which have both an alarm and immobiliser that can be set independently. The S4 - C2 is a Thatcham 2-1 upgrade for motorcycles that come with a category 2 immobiliser as standard.
Datatool claims that the S4 is the smallest and smartest alarm system on the market. The waterproof key fob is smaller and smarter too, with universal key conversions included, allowing users to combine the motorcycles ignition key/transponder into the Datatool remote control for added convenience.
Smart updates include a 'winter mode', enabling the owner to switch to ultra low current draw if the motorcycle is to be unused for a long period, so reducing the risk of flat batteries. The system even automatically warns the user should the machine's battery start to become discharged.
A unique pin override enables the owner to disarm the alarm even if the remote control fob has been lost. In addition, the S4-C1 features a ‘panic' button that can also be used to locate the motorcycle from a distance.
The S4-C1 Super Cat 1 has a unique ID tag - a built-in RFID transponder tag - which incorporates the original Trovan tagging system technology. This means that any motorcycle fitted with a Datatool S4-C1Super Cat One can be scanned and identified by every police force in the UK.
Although the S4 is packed with many unique features, it is easy to use and comes with a credit card sized easy reference guide.
The S4 is easy for dealers to install and comes with its own installation and testing tool, which constantly checks whether the system is being installed correctly. During installation the sensitivity of the alarm trigger can be set to suit the motorcycle, the location of the alarm sensor and the user's requirements.
The new Datatool S4 range is now available starting at £199.99 guide retail price including fitting.

21st Century CCTV Beats False Insurance Claim
[ 20 June 2007 ]
21st Century CCTV system has given Arriva the evidence to combat a false insurance claim made against the company. The CCTV images saved Arriva just under £5,000 in claims, which almost equates to the cost of installing CCTV on two buses.
The claim against Arriva was by a taxi driver with a history of making personal injury claims. He alleged that the Arriva bus had collided with him while his vehicle was stationary. He produced two eye witnesses – one a pedestrian and the other who claimed to have been driving by in the opposite direction just as the incident occurred.
The Arriva driver claimed that it was in fact the taxi that had collided with the bus while trying to overtake. Two elderly women who were on the bus at the time were the only other witnesses, who later withdrew their evidence due to poor health.
The Claimant's Solicitors were invited to view the CCTV footage taken by 21st Century, but the offer was declined and the Claimant insisted that the case proceeded to trial.
An Arriva CCTV Controller attended Court where the Claimant's Counsel indicated that he had not yet viewed the CCTV footage. It was shown to him and the Claimant's representatives then proposed a form of compromise. In light of the excellent CCTV footage which clearly showed that the collision was entirely the fault of the Taxi Driver, Arriva refused to compromise and the Claimant then elected to discontinue his claim before the start of the trial.
The claim was discontinued with a costs order in Arriva's favour.
Lynne Beale, Arriva's group risk manager, said: "We know from experience that our claims bill falls when CCTV is fitted. CCTV is proving cost effective and this is just another example of this in action"
Paul Rogers, Director of Sales and Marketing for 21st Century, comments: "We are delighted that the high quality of our images can be used to combat insurance fraud cases like this. Bus operators are increasingly falling victim to the compensation culture, and CCTV is both a deterrent and a weapon against dishonest claims. Bus operators are finding that CCTV systems simply pay for themselves, and their staff and customers get the extra protection such systems provide, just by being in place."

Norwich Union and the RAC intend to install 75,000 telematics "black box" devices under a widening of Norwich union's Pay-As-You-Drive™ Insurance scheme.
The Norwich Union Pay-As-You-Drive™ Insurance service uses cutting-edge, in-car technology to calculate premiums based on when and how far a vehicle is driven.
Toad will support the RAC with the company's nationwide network of over eighty engineers to install ‘black box' devices into Norwich Union's customers' cars.
Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales, comments: "Toad is delighted to be working with the RAC on this project. Our engineers were involved in fitting pay-as-you-drive technology for Norwich Union during the pilot and evaluation stages, and extending the service now to a wider market with the RAC is a very exciting development, both for our business and for the industry as a whole"

2,000th Wi-Fi System Installed
[ 15 May 2006 ]
21st Century continues to lead the field in the development of wireless technology for CCTV systems. Still the only CCTV provider in the UK with proven wireless LAN technology, the company has just completed its 2,000th Wi-Fi installation.
The 2,000th Wi-Fi installation, which allows automatic video download as vehicles enter the depot, was supplied with a full maintenance package.
21st Century's Wi-Fi system offers every depot the capacity to control up to 500 vehicles, although current installations are for depots running as few as 50 vehicles. The wireless technology dramatically reduces running costs because it allows the deport office to control the system, removing the need for individual support staff to download images manually.
The 21st Century Wi-Fi system can be supported through an industry leading maintenance package that includes the recently launched Heartbeat™ technology that remotely and automatically monitors the operational status of CCTV systems. Heartbeat™ reports on every CCTV camera installed and any problems, including vandalism and obscured views, are immediately highlighted and the exact location of the problem identified.
Heartbeat provides 24 hour protection at a fraction of the cost of routine manual checks and dramatically reduces the downtime of the CCTV system.
Paul Rogers, Director of Sales and Marketing for 21st Century, comments: "CCTV has become an essential part of any public transport system in order to protect staff and passengers alike. Maintaining systems manually involves many man hours and makes the whole thing expensive to run. Our Wi-Fi system ensures vehicle downtime is reduced to an absolute minimum and costs are further reduced because problems are quickly and efficiently identified."

Datatool & Tracker A Formidable Force In Motorbike Security
[ 2 May 2006 ]
Datatool, the UK's leading supplier of innovative electronic motorcycle products, has been appointed as the exclusive distributor for the TRACKER motorcycle product.
TRACKER's tried and tested Stolen Vehicle Recovery (SVR) system, is now available specifically for motorbikes and will be distributed through Datatool's dealer network across the UK.
The motorcycle TRACKER unit is easily hidden out of sight and once activated, its silent VHF signal pin-points the exact location of a stolen bike, whether it's bundled in the back of a moving van, a container or network of lock-up garages. TRACKER's range-topping Monitor system automatically notifies the motorcycle owner that their machine is being tampered with.
Full training will be carried out by both TRACKER and Datatool technical staff and, once trained, the dealer will be fully approved to install TRACKER products.
Paul Grimond, Datatool's Sales Director commented: "The inclusion of TRACKER into our product range is a perfect complement to our portfolio of electronic and physical security products and motorcycle accessories. No matter what type of motorcycle is to be protected, Datatool has the perfect product for any budget."
Greg Tucker, National Motorcycle Sales Manager for TRACKER Network, said: "Datatool is the UK's leading distributor of motorcycle security systems. This agreement enables motorcycle enthusiasts to purchase TRACKER, the UK's most successful SVR tracking systems, from Datatool's network of approved dealers."
He added: "We are already seeing successful recoveries including one biker who, after experiencing several bike thefts, fitted a TRACKER to his Kawasaki ZXR 10. His bike was then stolen by thieves who, in broad daylight, lifted it into the back of a van. Fortunately the police tracked it down within an hour while it was being driven in the vehicle. We've also celebrated a double success with a customer who had his Ducati stolen twice. Again, on both occasions it was lifted into the back of a van and tracked while in transit."

- automatic text message says plant or machinery is being tampered with -
Toad UK Limited, the UK's leading specialist vehicle security company, has developed Text-Alert; a system designed to alert plant and machinery owners, via text message, that their equipment is being tampered with.
Toad's Text-Alert system also has a web-based tracking facility, and at £199.99 offers unprecedented security and cost effective peace of mind.
Text-Alert automatically sends a text message to the owner's mobile phone in the event of the equipment being tampered with. What makes the Text-Alert system unique is that it uses a GSM modem, rather than a cell phone, to make the call. This not only means that it is compact and easy to fit (just three wires to connect) but also that it uses minimal current draw (just 1mA) so it won't put excessive strain on the battery.
For an additional annual fee of £29.99, the Toad Text-Alert system also allows the owner to track stolen plant and machinery on a web-based system that is accurate to 30 metres in built up areas.
Toad's Text-Alert is ideal for equipment that is routinely left out of earshot, e.g. left on site, in lock-ups or at remote locations and adds another layer of security.
Text-Alert is highly flexible and can be programmed via the owner's mobile phone. That means it can be re-directed to a colleague should the key holder need to be changed. There is also the option to adjust the movement sensitivity remotely via text message.
Text-Alert utilises an Orange pre-pay SIM card, offering Europe-wide coverage. The only operating cost will be the standard Orange text charge per trigger or command. Owners will receive up to three alerts per trigger, after which the system must be re-set via the ignition. This minimises the cost of the calls while maintaining a high level of security. The system will also send a text alert if the battery runs low or if other pre-set faults are detected. The Toad Text-Alert system is supplied with a credit card size User Guide, which can be carried at all times.

Fraud Detection To Combat Epidemic In Portable Navigation Replacement
[ 18 March 2006 ]
TOAD, the UK's market leader in automotive technology insurance replacement, claims that fraud detection is imperative to minimise the insurers risk in the growing area of theft of portable navigation systems.
In the last six months, Toad has seen claims for replacement portable navigation systems rise dramatically, particularly following their popularity over the Christmas period. Recent police figures show that 500 portable navigation systems are being stolen every month.
Toad's offers claims management services to individually validate each claim to ensure the claimant owned the product and model they are claiming for and then to ensure the replacement equipment is selected using advances in technology to the insurers best cost advantage.
Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales comments: "Our validation technique uses a soft approach however it is very precise and clearly highlights areas to investigate further if there is an inconsistency or possibility of exaggeration or fraud. Once validated we select product replacements taking advantage of technological advances and current market value rather than a cash equivalent based on the original price paid.'
Sarssam concludes; " We are uniquely placed with direct purchasing arrangements with TomTom and Garmin, the two current market leaders, allowing us to offer the best price on replacement products, we believe the combination of claims validation and direct pricing offers considerable savings to our Insurance clients in this growing area of risk."
Toad expects portable navigation systems to account for a third of the company's replacement business by the end of 2006.For more information call 0870 417 1747 or www.tg21plc.com

Epidemic Increase In Portable Navigation Replacement Causing Confusion
[ 3 March 2006 ]
TOAD, the UK's market leader in automotive technology insurance replacement, has seen a dramatic increase in demand for replacement portable navigation systems. Scotland Yard released figures just before Christmas stating that 500 are being stolen every month* and thefts of portable navigation systems now account for 10% of all thefts from cars.
As the UK's only insurance replacement specialist with direct agreements with the two market leaders, TomTom and Garmin, Toad expects demand to increase throughout 2006 until portable navigation systems account for a third of the company's insurance replacement business.
Toad also reports that there is some confusion within the market as to whether portable navigation systems are covered under motor insurance (as a part of the car or an accessory) or under household insurance under extended use.
Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales comments: "Insurers are interpreting theft and cover of these devices in different ways, some insurers offer cover under motor policies, some under household and some have yet to set policy'
Sarssam concludes: "With their popularity growing, thefts of portable navigation systems are set to increase and Toad is well placed to validate and replace stolen equipment in a cost effective and efficient manner.'

Preventing Protection Failure
[ 6 January 2006 ]
- new on-board CCTV maintenance system -
In the age of CCTV protection, transport operators are fighting a constant battle to keep their systems operational. A temporary failure, however caused, invariably precedes an incident, rendering the system ineffectual. Manual maintenance is costly and time consuming and cannot provide one hundred percent cover.
21st Century, the UK's market leader in advanced transport recording systems, has developed a revolutionary maintenance programme that remotely and automatically monitors the operational status of CCTV systems. Heartbeat™ operates remotely, monitoring and reporting on every CCTV camera in the company's market leading ProGuard CCTV system. Any problems, including vandalism and obscured views, are immediately highlighted and the exact location of the problem identified.
Using the RAG Status (red, amber green) system, problems can be identified immediately and an engineer sent to the right location with advance warning of the nature of the fault.
Heartbeat provides 24 hour protection at a fraction of the cost of routine manual checks and dramatically reduces the downtime of the CCTV system.
The Heartbeat system was launched last month at the Coach & Bus Live exhibition at the NEC. There was a lot of interest in the capabilities of the system from transport operators.
Paul Frodsham, Managing Director of 21st Century, comments: "CCTV is now an integral part of any public transport system. When it works it is extremely effective in protecting staff and the public and assisting in processing insurance claims. However, it only takes one camera to be out of action at the time of an incident for that protection to be lost. Heartbeat will instantly recognise when there is a problem with a camera or elsewhere in the system and identify the exact location of the fault so that it can be quickly rectified, maximising the protection offered."

World's first speed camera locator designed for motorcycles
[ 28 October 2005 ]
- system designed to offer safety and protection will remain legal under proposed Road Safety Bill -
Datatool the UK's premier motorcycle solutions supplier has been appointed the exclusive UK distributor for the worlds first speed camera location system specifically designed for motorcycles. Inforad, priced at just £99.95, uses GPS satellite technology to alert motorcycle riders to the presence of fixed speed camera locations and accident blackspots.
Inforad knows the exact location of a motorcycle and its proximity to a fixed speed camera site. Using GPS technology, riders will be warned in advance when approaching a fixed speed camera location by an ultra bright LED. If riders are exceeding the designated speed limit within the fixed speed camera location the LED will flash. The LED is mounted on a highly flexible stalk, which is installed at the front of the motorcycle and can be adjusted to the rider's line of sight.
The Inforad database is constantly updated with new camera sites which users can download via the internet. Downloads are free in the first year and available in subsequent years for the market's lowest annual subscription rate of £24.99.
Inforad also offers European protection, as it contains details of fixed camera sites in France, Germany, Austria, Netherlands, Belgium and Switzerland.
Speed cameras remain in more than 6,000 locations across the UK, despite surveys throwing doubt over their effectiveness and even raising concerns about links to increased road deaths. A recent survey carried out by the Association of British Drivers claimed that speed cameras may actually increase the number of fatal accidents at dangerous sites around the UK. It found that road deaths at the type of accident site targeted by speed cameras have risen significantly since cameras were first introduced in 1991.
Nick Grimond, Managing Director of TG21, Datatool's parent company, comments: "The Government's Road Safety Bill acknowledges that GPS based systems like Inforad complement the Government's policy to ensure that camera sites are visible and conspicuous to road users, and so help deter excessive and inappropriate speeds on the roads."
Nick Grimond concludes: "We know that the sudden braking and acceleration at camera sites is a hazard in itself. Inforad can eliminate this and independent MORI research has shown that 76% of safety camera detector users drive more carefully as a result of their use."

Protect your bike with your mobile phone
[ 28 October 2005 ]
Datatool, the UK's premier motorcycle solutions company, has developed Text-Alert; a system designed to alert motorcycle owners, via text message, that their motorcycle is being tampered with.

This has two major advantages over previous text systems; firstly, it is compact and easy to fit (just three wires to connect) and secondly it uses minimal current draw, at just 1mA, so it won't put excessive strain on the battery.
The Datatool Text-Alert also allows the owner to track their vehicle on a web-based system that is accurate to 30 metres in built up areas.
Datatool's Text-Alert is ideal for motorcycles that are routinely parked out of earshot, e.g. left outside flats, offices, hotels, in town, in lock-ups and adds another layer of security.
Text-Alert is highly flexible and can be programmed via the owner's mobile 'phone. Toad links with UK's first 100% Online Insurer
[ 21 July 2005 ]
Toad UK is to provide vehicle security and in car entertainment system replacement services to customers of swiftcover.com, the new on-line insurance provider that launched this month. The arrangement has been set up through an agreement with innovative new insurance solutions provider SIMS.
SIMS Claims Services Limited beat off more established companies to serve all of the claims needs for swiftcover.com, the first genuinely 100% on-line insurer, where customers can do everything online including renewing a policy, changing the insured car and making and tracking their claims. Toad will provide replacement audio products to policy-holders making a claim on swiftcover.com's motor insurance policies.
Simon Goodwin, Toad's Director of Sales for Insurance and Fleet services, commented: "We are delighted to be involved in this exciting new venture. More than half of the UK's households are now on-line, and it makes sense to offer these services in this way. Once customers make a claim, in keeping with the streamlined online operation of swiftcover.com, our team will be electronically notified by SIMS with all details. Toad will then source the correct replacement product, contact the policyholder and arrange installation at their location of choice by a Toad engineer."
Toad is the first alternative for vehicle security helpline
[ 19 July 2005 ]
Toad UK Limited has set up a dedicated vehicle security helpline for policyholders of First Alternative, the non-standard car insurer set up by Peter Wood and HBOS.
First Alternative commissioned the telephone helpline in response to customer demand and Toad was selected as the provider of choice because of the company's reputation and expertise in vehicle security and direct customer care.
Simon Goodwin, Toad's Director of Sales for Insurance and Fleet services, commented: "First Alternative speciali ses in insuring private motorists with higher performance, higher value or higher risk cars. Its customers often have specific requirements regarding vehicle security and require specialised advice. We provide that advice, and because we have our own team of mobile engineers we can arrange for any security systems to be fitted as well, all in the one call."
First Alternative's customers will contact the Toad security helpline via a dedicated telephone number and Toad's vehicle security experts will discuss, advise and arrange to supply and fit Thatcham-rated security systems in compliance with the vehicle value and risk criteria of the insurer.
System installation will be carried out by Toad's UK-wide network of mobile installation engineers, and Toad will provide First Alternative with regular and comprehensive management reporting of all the systems installed through the scheme.
Security products supplied through Toad range from alarms and immobilisers through to Category Q and Category 5 rated stolen vehicle recovery systems, which utilise the latest telematics technologies.
Simon Goodwin concludes: "This extra service for First Alternative customers provides them with sound advice and expert installation of security to keep their vehicles safe and secure."
Toad reports record growth in mobile phone car kit installations
[ 15 July 2005 ]
Toad Limited, the UK's leading installer of mobile phone car kits, has seen demand for installations increase month on month since the service was introduced in 2003. The company has just reached its target of 50,000 installations and expects demand to rise even further over the coming months.
The demand for Toad's hands-free kit installation services rose significantly in December 2003 with the introduction of legislation making the use of hand-held mobile phones in cars illegal. The second phase of this legislation is expected later this year, and Toad expects demand to jump still further.
Andrew Sarssam, Director of Sales commented: "We had originally set ourselves an ambitious target of 50,000 car kit installations by July 2005, and I am delighted we reached our goal. Our service has gone from strength to strength, with clients including top airtime providers and mobile phone manufacturers."
Sarssam believes that they key to Toad's success is in the use of dedicated engineers. He explains: "Toad's approach to the market is very different from competitors, because we employ our engineers rather than using subcontractors. This way we retain control over quality standards and this is fundamental to delivering high levels of customer service."
Sarssam believes that the market will continue to grow during 2005: "Whilst many responsible companies and individuals purchased car kits when Phase 1 legislation was announced, there remains a vast number of phone users relying on headsets and non-compliant plug and play equipment. Clearly, there is still some confusion as to what is and isn't legal."
Sarssam continues: "When Phase 2 is announced later this year, introducing penalty points and heavier fines, we expect public awareness to be heightened and for this to prompt another surge in demand for installations. This, coupled with continuing demand for re-installations as people change their cars or upgrade their hand-sets, should see us reach our next milestone of 100,000 installations."
Masterlease spreads security message through Toad
[ 23 June 2005 ]
Toad (UK) Ltd ("Toad") has been selected by Masterlease (formerly Interleasing plc) to supply and fit vehicle security systems for the fleet management company's customers. Masterlease, the UK's market leader in fleet funding and fleet management, views the addition of this service as essential in providing a comprehensive service to its customers.
One of the main reasons Toad was chosen to provide the advice and installation service was its ability to install and service systems in vehicles at their operating location.
Simon Goodwin, Toad's Director of Sales for Insurance and Fleet services, commented: "In a market where vehicles are frequently distributed to remote locations, away from a central service area, it is important that our national team of in-house engineers are able to not only install systems but also to maintain our commitment to product and labour warranties.'
Toad chosen by alternative networks to provide advice and installation service for hands-free mobile phone kits
[ 23 June 2005 ]

Toad will provide an advice service to Alternative Networks customers on the most suitable in-car kit for their needs, and the nationwide team of Toad engineers will perform the installation service.
Simon Goodwin, Toad's Director of Sales for Insurance and Fleet services, commented: "There is a vast array of vehicle, phone and car kit combinations available today and Alternative Networks customers will be able to speak to Toad helpline staff who will use Toad's leading-edge, in-house developed IT system to match a compatible kit to their phone and vehicle, thus optimising the overall quality and effectiveness of the service."
He continued: "Professional installation of manufacturer recommended hands-free kits gives users the best quality reception and transmission. Toad's engineers comply fully with MPT1362 (the government guideline for installation of in-vehicle systems) and install equipment which interfaces to the vehicle's electrics, audio system and even steering wheel controls to obtain the best usability and sound quality."
